Here are a few pictures of my first clock design. It ticks, but not for very long yet. The weights are set up so it should run for 4 days. Maybe I need to change the drive mechanism so it is a 30 hour clock.
It is my own design and slightly different gearing than most traditional clocks. All of the gears sit on 2 primary shafts with the drive weights on a 3rd shaft. This forces all wheels and pinions to have the same number of teeth. Different gear ratios are possible and as long as the total tooth count is the same, the shaft spacing stays consistent. For example, my clock has 50 tooth gears driving 10 tooth pinions, 48 teeth driving 12 teeth, and 45 teeth driving 15 teeth. This gives 5:1, 4:1, and 3:1 gear ratios that all have the same axle spacing.
The escapement has 18 teeth with a 1 second pendulum (2 seconds for a complete back and forth movement). The rotational speeds of each gear are:
escapement: 36 seconds per rotation
10:50 ratio: 3 minutes per rotation
10:50 ratio: 15 minutes per rotation
12:48 ratio: 1 hour per rotation (this is the minute hand)
12:48 ratio: 4 hours per rotation
15:45 ratio: 12 hours per rotation (this is the hour hand)
The gears are cut from 0.2" thick birch plywood from Home Depot. I bought it many years ago, but I don't think they have anything of similar quality anymore. Other woods include maple, walnut, oak, beech, and pine. Most of the parts were cut on a CNC router.
