Peg Gear Clocks - Houtman Designs
« on: January 17, 2007, 09:39:28 PM »
Includes a history of clockmaking and plans that can be ordered.  I've not yet ordered these but it appears that they have a simple approach to assembling gears using, you guessed it, pegs.  Also, a grasshopper escapement is used.  Does anyone have experience building from these plans?

Houtman's design is really quite innovative - but i bought these plans when it first came out, and i could never get it to work. after a few months of frustration, i smashed it into the fireplace - very therapeutic.

Maybe it was pilot error

Something ain't right if someone who can build a wooden watch can't build a simple clock from a set of plans.  Of course, we're inclined to blame you just so you don't get too big a head over your own clock designs!

I like the fireplace therapy approach.  I have a large hammer that produces a very satisfying thwacking noise when applied to uncooperative yet delicate mechanisms.

What do you think accounted for the difficulty?  Was it a gear friction problem or an escapement adjustment problem?  Or maybe a builder attitude problem (yuk yuk yuk)?

"builder attitude" was definitely a factor...

these plans do have a very nice grasshopper with some unique features, and an excellent temperature-compensated pendulum.

yeah, probably pilot error, and this isn't the only clock project that's made my day as a nice fire.
